Product description
This spangenhelm is based on originals depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. Warriors in Western Europe wore nose helmets like this from the 9th century onward. On the Bayeux Tapestry, both Anglo-Saxon and Norman fighters appear wearing this type of helmet. It was likely in use until the First Crusade.
Around the 11th century, smiths developed a stronger nasal helmet made from a single piece, which proved more durable than the older spangenhelm. Even so, spangenhelms like this were easier to produce and could be repaired out in the field. The helmet bowl is built from multiple plates joined together with 'spangen'. In medieval manuscripts, nose helmets like this almost always appear paired with a chainmail coif.
This is a fully combat-ready replica made from 2 mm thick steel. The two halves are welded together, and the steel bands and 3 mm thick nose guard (spang) are screwed on. It comes with a textile liner and chin strap. Choose from two sizes:
-
Size M: fits a maximum head circumference of 61 cm
-
Size L: fits a maximum head circumference of 64 cm
Both sizes weigh about 2.5 kg.
