This Viking helmet is based on historical originals of the Spangenhelm, which was one of the most popular types of helmets in the Early Middle Ages. This spangenhelm is of the nasal helmet type. Helmets like these were used throughout Europe from the 9th century onwards. They remained in use at least until just after 1066, around which time they are depicted on the famous Bayeux Tapestry worn by both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors. Helmets like these were used by both the Vikings and other Germanic peoples.
Ultimately, the well-known nasal helmet developed from this type of spangenhelm. In contrast to later nasal helmets, spangenhelm were originally made from multiple parts, which were attached to each other with 'spangen' (bands). This was a cheaper production technique that was introduced in the Late Roman period. The nasal provides protection for the entire face while offering optimal field of vision. An additional advantage was that these spangenhelm could be repaired during campaigns.
The Spangenhelm has a conical shape. This specimen has a chain mail aventail at the back for extra protection of the neck.
This helmet is made of 1 mm thick steel and is therefore perfect for LARP, Cosplay or theater. The helmet has a cotton inlay for extra wearing comfort. You can fasten the helmet with a leather strap under the chin so it stays comfortably in place for hours.
