Product description

This surcoat is based on various illustrations in the Manesse Codex.

Wide, sleeveless surcoats were worn by the working class, while narrow surcoats were worn by the aristocracy. Narrow surcoats like this one appeared in the 14th century and were sometimes considered controversial. This type of surcoat developed during a period of sexual liberalization. The surcoat accentuates the shape of the dress worn underneath, which drew criticism from some moralists. Nevertheless, the narrow surcoat remained in use well into the 15th century and, from 1525 onward, even became ceremonial attire.

This surcoat is made of 75% wool and is hand-dyed.
