This amulet is modeled on a find that once hung from the horse harness of a Roman officer who died in the Varus battle near Kalkriese. Fascinum amulets in phallic shape were widespread in Roman antiquity and were worn as pendants around the neck to protect against the evil eye.

In ancient times, the phallus was not regarded as obscene, as in later Christian moral views, but as a general symbol of fertility, prosperity and happiness that could ward off evil - fascinum amulets were even used by children worn and attached to the harness of Roman cavalry horses. Similar amulets are also known from the Middle Ages and numerous non-European cultures.
