This late medieval cap is based on the round headgear that were worn in the late medieval period in Europe. The model shows similarities with the Italian beret, which developed from simple, round cap-shaped hats. Similar headgear were already known in the late Roman period, including the pileus pannonicus, which was worn by Roman soldiers.

In the late medieval period, this type of hat became particularly popular in Flanders and Burgundy, and it was also widely worn by townspeople and citizens in Southern Europe. From the end of the medieval period, the hat remained in use during the Renaissance. Younger wearers often wore it loosely and at an angle on their head, while cardinals and other high-ranking persons wore it more often upright, as can be seen in depictions of, among others, the doges of Venice.
