Landsknechts were the famous German mercenary soldiers of the late 15th and 16th centuries: infantrymen who, following the Swiss example (the Reislaufer), fought with long pikes and arquebuses, initially in the service of the Habsburg emperors. They played a decisive role in battles such as the Battle of Pavia (1525) and the Siege of Vienna (1529), and became infamous for their exuberant clothing style: bright color combinations, ostentatious cuts and enormous puffed sleeves that defied the strict dress codes of their time.

From the second half of the 15th century to the mid-16th century, men's fashion in Europe underwent a real change: while the High Middle Ages had predominantly bag-shaped clothing, late medieval and early Renaissance fashion emphasized the contours of the body. The hose - the tight fitting one trousers - replaced the loose bones and was worn by all classes. A permanent element was the codpiece: a triangular piece of cloth for the cross, initially functional but increasingly stylized over the course of the 16th century, until it reached its peak around 1540.
