Leather vests like this were worn from the early 16th to the mid-17th century by people who worked outdoors, such as gamekeepers, seafarers, and soldiers. Leather vests (jerkins) replaced the earlier arming doublets and were worn as a base layer under plate armor. Like the later arming doublet, this garment was also popular for wear without armor or entirely outside a military context. They gave the wearer a rugged, masculine appearance and offered good protection against the elements. From the 17th century, the buff coat developed from this garment, becoming exclusively military. Historically, this type of leather jacket was often worn over the doublet, and sometimes the doublet and jacket were matched.
