History doesn't live only in books or museums — it lives on in the people who breathe new life into it. Together with my brothers, we walk in the footsteps of the crusaders of Godfrey of Bouillon, one of the most famous leaders of the First Crusade. Through re-enactment, we try not only to showcase the clothing and equipment of that era, but also the spirit of brotherhood, faith and sacrifice that makes this period so special.
Our inspiration comes from the 11th century, when knights from Europe set out towards the Holy Land. Godfrey of Bouillon, originating from the Low Countries, became a legendary figure by conquering Jerusalem in 1099. What fascinates us about this history isn't just the battle, but the human story behind the Crusades: long journeys, heavy hardships, faith that bound people together and the enormous cultural impact these events left behind.
During our re-enactments we wear hand-made clothing, mail shirts, helmets and shields based on historical sources from Celtic Webmerchant. Every detail — from the cross on the undertunic to the leather straps and weapons — helps us get closer to the past. When we stand together as a group of crusaders, it feels like history becomes tangible for a moment. The sound of steel, the creaking of leather and the campfire in the evening create an atmosphere that's hard to describe in words.
Our youngest brother chooses a different path by portraying a Viking. Although he comes from an earlier period than the crusaders, he forms a beautiful addition to our passion for living history. His clothing, axe and Scandinavian appearance showcase another side of Europe's past: the world of explorers, warriors and traders from the north. Together we show how versatile history can be.
What appeals to us most about living history is the connection with others. At events we meet people from different countries who share the same passion. Despite different backgrounds, we immediately understand each other through our shared love of the past. History becomes not dry subject matter, but a living experience that brings people together.
With these photos we want to show not only our outfits and equipment, but especially the sense of camaraderie and honour that belongs to these historical characters. For us, re-enactment is more than a hobby — it's a way to keep cultural heritage alive and inspire others to look beyond films and legends.
When we pick up our swords and put on our cloaks, we step out of the modern world for a moment and back into the time of Godfrey of Bouillon. And that's exactly what makes this passion so special.
