In the 14th century, the gambeson evolved alongside the clothing fashions of the time. Originally, the pourpoint was developed as a variant of the gambeson, but later it was also worn in an unpadded version in everyday life. This gambeson, or padded pourpoint, features padding that protects the body against chainmail and plate armor. The garment marked a major shift in European fashion, as it accentuated the shape of the body rather than the wide, long robes that were so popular in the High Middle Ages.

This garment is based on the doublet of the 14th-century Duke Charles de Blois of Brittany. It is representative of the types worn in the 14th and 15th centuries. It can be worn on its own as armor or as padding under armor. The mi-parti coloring is typical of 14th-century fashion.
