Product description

The spear was very popular during the Viking Age. The large number and variety of surviving specimens suggest that spears were used more frequently than swords, because they were not only easier to make, but also much cheaper. The so-called winged or lugged spear, which primarily served as a thrusting weapon and is often associated with the Norsemen, actually originated in the Frankish Carolingian realm. After the Vikings adopted this spear, it remained in use - both for hunting and for warfare - until the late medieval period. The wings or protrusions on the sides are designed to prevent the spear from penetrating too deeply during an attack (which would make it more difficult to pull the spear out) and to ward off enemy blows during combat. This spear head in Carolingian style with wings is perfectly suited for Viking and medieval settings (circa 8th/9th to 11th/12th century). It is made of hardened 9260 carbon steel and has a length of approximately 28.5 cm, with edges of approximately 17.5 cm long. The blad tapers strongly from a basic wide base to a long, narrow point and is reinforced with a characteristic, raised ridge along the center for extra rigidity and penetrating power. The wings on either side of the socket have a thickness of approximately 4 mm. Using two pre-drilled holes, the spear head can be attached to a wood shaft of your choice, allowing you to create your own Viking or early medieval spear. Shaft and additional fastening material are not included.
