Thor was the most venerated god in the Viking Age. His symbol, the Thor's hammer (Mjölnir), was worn by both men and women, and around 1,000 examples have been found in Scandinavia, England, Germany, the Baltic states, and Russia. Most hammers are simple, made of iron or silver; around 100 are richly decorated. They probably developed from older Germanic amulets, such as the maces from the Roman period that were associated with Donar. The earliest Thor's hammers date from the Migration Period and Vendel period (from c. AD 540), but they became especially popular during the Viking Age, possibly in response to Christian crosses.
