The Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson succeeded Edward the Confessor in January 1066. Immediately after his coronation, his brothers Tostig and Harald Hardrada of Norway began a war primarily aimed at reclaiming the former Danelaw.

Harold's armies were defeated during the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066. However, this loss was not decisive and Harold managed to decisively defeat a combined invasion force of Norse Vikings just days before another, Norman invasion force crossed the channel. William the Conqueror had planned his expedition very carefully. He crossed to South England, where Harold's army, exhausted from the Battle of Stamford Bridge and the extremely rapid march south, arrived.
King Harold was killed during the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. This marks the end of Anglo-Saxon rule over England.
