This pendant shows the prow of a cult ship, a motif from the Nordic bronze Age, and is based on a find from Denmark, ca. 100 BC. The piece of jewelry is associated with the Jastorf culture, a Celtic-Germanic transitional culture from the early Iron Age. Ship motifs from this period are often combined with the symbolism of waterfowl, which were widely venerated within Proto-Indo-European paganism until the Early Middle Ages; parts of waterfowl have also been recovered as grave goods from religious specialists from both the bronze Age like the Viking Age.
