This cap of linen is inspired by the head covering worn by the poorer classes between the 12th and 13th centuries, as depicted in the Maciejowski Bible, among others. Simple and practical, the hood protected the head, kept the hair in place and provided comfort under a helmet or chain mail hood.

Throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, these types of caps were also worn under other headgear, such as the bycocket and the beret. Linen was one of the most used fabrics in the Middle Ages: strong, cool in summer and easy to wash, making it a popular choice for headgear and underwear. The hood is tied under the chin with straps.
