Axes like this appeared from the second half of the 15th century. Around this time, armor was becoming increasingly effective, creating a need for weapons capable of striking through the gaps in plate armor. Axes like this were used by both aristocratic cavalry and infantry.
The back of this axe features a point, similar to that of a war hammer. The main weapon, the axe blade, has a sloped, rounded edge ending in a hook. The hook could be used to pull opponents from their horses, while the rounded edge kept the weight of this axe lower than that of a typical felling axe. Axes like these remained in use until the late 16th century and were even still used during the English Civil War.
This battle axe is made of semi-sharp 1065 carbon steel, tempered to a hardness of 48–52 HRC.
