Product description

The so-called bollock dagger, also known as a ballock dagger or kidney dagger, owes its striking name to the two characteristic bulbous or egg-shaped protrusions that form the cross-guard and give the handle an explicitly phallic appearance. This specific type of medieval dagger was used throughout Europe and appeared in countless variations during its exceptionally long lifespan, which extended from the late medieval period (14th century) to the Renaissance. On the British Isles, it even persisted into the 17th/18th century in modified forms (dudgeon dagger in England and dirk in Scotland).

Usually worn as a side weapon alongside a sword or rapier, this thrusting weapon enjoyed great popularity among knights, as its sharp tapering blade with a sharp tip was ideal for piercing padded armor and chainmail shirt or stabbing the opponent through the joints of his plate armor in close-range combat. But beyond being a lethal weapon, it was also used as a fashionable expression of wealth, and knights and wealthy citizens often wore their artfully crafted and richly decorated dagger as a status symbol.

This magnificent, stylish reconstruction of a 16th-century German dagger features a 9260 spring steel blade with a diamond-shaped cross-section that tapers evenly toward a sharp tip. The cutting edges are not ground, and the tang is secured to the pommel with screws. The grip with the characteristic lobate cross-guard is carved from a single piece of wood and reinforced with antiqued brass fittings – a pommel cap decorated with crosses and an equally elegant, downward-curved cross-guard with ram's head ends.

This knightly dagger comes with a vegetable-tanned, neatly stitched leather scabbard equipped with a leather cord for attachment to a belt. The cross and ram's head symbols that adorn the pommel cap and the cross-guard are also reflected in the beautiful antiqued brass scabbard fittings. This Renaissance dagger is designed as a collector's item or decoration/display piece and, alongside its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, for example to complete your costume.
