A LARP weapon (Live Action Role Play) is specially designed to be safe, light and controllable, while looking as realistic as possible. The exact construction can vary slightly depending on the maker and country, but the basic structure is pretty much always the same.
The core
The core forms the skeleton of the weapon. It's usually made of fibreglass, PVC, wood or carbon. The core provides stability and control and is slightly flexible, but must not bend or sag. The core runs almost the full length of the weapon, but never to the tip. Without a good core, a LARP weapon is either uncontrollable or breakable.
Point protection
The tip of a LARP weapon is designed for extra safety. It consists of soft foam with an open structure and is designed to absorb impacts during thrusts, such as stabs. Point protection is often constructed separately from the core and is essential for safe play.
Foam layer
Around the core is the striking zone. This is made of EVA or PU foam and consists of multiple layers. These layers provide shock absorption and give the weapon its shape, such as a blade, cutting edge, mace or axe. The foam layer is thicker on striking zones and thinner on decorative parts. The thicker and softer the foam, the safer the weapon.
Flexible coating (latex or alternative)
The coating forms the outer layer of the weapon and holds everything together. Usually latex is used for this, but sometimes silicone or other polymers. This layer provides durability, water resistance and a realistic appearance. The coating is applied in multiple layers and largely determines the lifespan of the weapon.
Paint and finishing
The paint and finishing give the weapon its realistic look. Flexible paint is used for this, often latex-based. Think of metal effects, wood grain or wear marks. The weapon is finished with a sealant or silicone spray. Proper maintenance significantly extends the lifespan of these layers.
Grip and pommel
The grip is usually covered with leather, suede or latex and can be equipped with extra grip texture. The pommel is soft and safely designed and prevents the hand from slipping off the grip. A pommel must not contain a hard core.
Everything in the construction of a LARP weapon is aimed at safe play without injury, even during intense combat.
