The earliest proven use of the gambeson dates from the late 11th - early 12th century AD. Although it is likely that gambeson were already used in the early Middle Ages. The gambeson can be worn both alone and under the chainmail shirt. Under the chainmail shirt it offers the body protection against the impact of blows directly on the body. Chainmail shirts were sometimes so thick and tough that they offered protection in themselves against arrows fired with low poundage. This type of gambeson is made according to the model depicted in the Morgan Bible from 1250. They remained popular until the 14th century, after which a different type of gambeson, which resembled a quilted pourpoint, was introduced

This gambeson is suitable for re-enactment combat and can be worn under an armour or chainmail shirt. It is made of cotton with polyester padding. This gambeson has a thickness of 12 mm.
