The so-called "winged" or "lugged" spear, which was primarily used as a thrusting weapon, actually originated in the Frankish-Carolingian period and remained in use well into the high medieval period as both a war and hunting spear. The wings or lugs on the sides were designed to prevent over-penetration during an attack (which would make it harder to pull the spear out) and to ward off enemy blows during combat. The "boar spear", as the name suggests, was specially designed for hunting boars and large game and had many variations. The side wings of the spear head were not only intended to prevent the spear from penetrating too deep into the animal's body, but also gave the hunter extra control and protection against a wounded and fierce animal. This size medieval spear head is ideal for settings from the 8th/9th to 11th/12th century. The design shows strong similarities to the Carolingian winged spears that were widely used by warriors and hunters in the early medieval period. Made from hardened 9260 carbon steel, this spear head has a length of approximately 50 cm (19.75 in.) and an imposing long, wide blad-shaped blade, with which deep and wide stab wounds could be inflicted and a size animal could be killed with one powerful blow. The protruding lugs just below the blade on both sides of the socket are approximately 4 mm thick. With the help of two pre-drilled holes, the spear head can be firmly attached to the wood shaft of your choice to create your own spear. Please note that shaft and additional fastening material are not included in the delivery.
