Product description
The justaucorps originated in the second half of the 17th century and developed from the casaque, a loose travelling coat, into a more fitted jacket — hence the name, which means 'fitted to the body'. Early models from around 1670–1700 reached approximately to the knee and featured a relatively straight cut, broad cuffs, and a long row of buttons from neck to hem. Beneath the justaucorps, a shirt, long waistcoat, and knee breeches were worn. During the 18th century, the justaucorps became a standard part of the gentleman's wardrobe and the model continued to evolve. Ultimately, this jacket formed an important predecessor to the frock coat and the modern three-piece suit.
