Product description
The chaperon became a popular piece of clothing during the High Middle Ages, but was already worn from the Early Middle Ages. It protects the head, neck, back and shoulders from cold weather and rain and is nice and warm to sleep in during a camp or festival. During the High Middle Ages, the chaperon was a popular item of clothing for all classes in society. The upper class wore chaperons in expensive colors such as blue, red and purple. The lower classes wore it in bright colors but cheap colors such as green and yellow. In the Late Middle Ages, they were most often worn by the lower classes and were worn in more alternative ways. They were then also made in more sober colors.
This chaperon is based on clothing fragments found in Skjoldehamm. The fabric is woven into a herringbone pattern. This was a commonly used fabric for centuries.
