The justaucorps emerged in the second half of the 17th century and developed into an important part of European menswear in the 18th century. The long coat was worn over a shirt and waistcoat and formed, together with knee breeches, the characteristic three-piece men's fashion of this period.
In the second half of the 18th century, the silhouette of the justaucorps changed again. The coat gradually became narrower and more fitted, while the front panels were cut away further and often worn open. This kept the waistcoat underneath clearly visible. By the end of the 18th century, this fashion developed further towards the frock coat, which would become characteristic of menswear around 1800.
The coat is made of sturdy cotton and is fully lined on the inside. It features a nicely fitted upper part and flares out widely at the hem. It has brass buttons on the sleeves, chest, and pockets. Characteristic of these coats are also the colored horizontal and vertical stripes.
