Product description
Leather jerkins like this were worn from the early 16th to mid-17th century by people who worked outdoors, such as gamekeepers, seafarers and soldiers. Leather jerkins replaced the earlier arming doublet and were worn as an underlayer beneath plate armour. Like the later arming doublet, this garment was also popular to wear without armour or not in a military context at all. They gave the wearer a tough masculine appearance and offered good protection against the weather. From the 17th century onwards, the buff coat developed from this garment, which was exclusively military. Historically, this type of leather jackets were often worn over the doublet. Sometimes the doublet and jacket matched each other.
The adjustable nature of this jerkin ensures a perfect fit and is suitable for different body types. The rope work on the side ensures optimal positioning and secure adjustment of this lightweight armour, creating flexibility and ease of movement.
Please note that, because the leather used is a natural material, there may be small differences in colour and texture between products.
