This lunula amulet is a replica of a 10th-century original, discovered in the Viking town of Birka. Around the 10th century, the tradition of wearing Lunula amulets by Slavic peoples was passed on to the Vikings of the Baltic Sea region. Long before this time, lunula amulets were worn by Germanic tribes, a tradition that the Romans adopted from them. Lunula amulets were worn especially by women and girls. They offered protection. This lunula is quasi-granulated. The original is fitted with silver metalwork that was soldered onto the jewelry piece by piece. This model is cast from a single piece.
