In the 2nd century AD the Roman developed fibula continues thanks to new designs and techniques. A popular type from this period was the shield fibula, also called a disc fibula, with a decorative disc-shaped center that was often richly decorated with inlaid gemstones or stamped motifs. This combination of functionality and aesthetics made the disc fibula a popular piece of jewelry and status symbol in the Roman Empire. This specimen shows a satyr's head among wine grapes.
