The Viking torque is made of rods neatly twisted together to a thickness of 5 mm and the ends are two raven heads. The model for the Torque comes from the Swedish treasure of Undrom. The Viking torque is very flexible and suitable for a neck with a circumference of 40-45 cm and can be worn by both men and women.
The Torque: from Indo-European oath ring to jewelry. The torc is known as a typical Celtic ornament, but was also worn by other Indo-European peoples such as Germans, Scythians, Thracians and even Romans. This tradition began around 1200 BC and lasted well into Roman times. Torques probably originated in the Indo-European steppe culture. They may have served as oath rings, linked to oath-bound reciprocity. Wearing a torc symbolized loyalty to a deity, tribe or leader. During the migration period, the 'Celtic' torques fell out of use. Germans chose ring shapes such as bracelet and rings. In the Viking Age, the torc returned in the form of silver and bronze neck rings.
Raven symbols are probably associated with intelligence, tact, knowledge, magic and predictive ability. While the wolf stands more for cunning, aggression and strength, the raven stands more for thoughtfulness, acuteness and the careful pursuit of goals. Both emphasize Germanic and Viking culture in two different ways. Both come together in the god Odin/Wodan whose role is to guard the cosmic order.
