These (early) medieval turnshoes with a slightly raised shaft are based on historical models from the 7th to the 12th century. They were found in places such as Haithabu (Hedeby), an important Viking settlement, as well as in London, where similar styles have been dated to the early to mid-13th century. The shoes close with two leather straps that wrap across the instep, ensuring a snug fit. A striking feature is the distinctive front seam along the top of the shoe, which is characteristic of this type of footwear. Turnshoes are medieval leather shoes that were stitched inside out and then turned right side out so that the seams were protected on the inside.

The shoes have been pre-treated, so you can wear them straight away without needing to grease or polish them first—although doing so can help preserve the leather even longer. Thanks to this treatment, the leather has a beautiful antique look and offers better resistance to moisture, making them a practical choice for damp autumn events. Only the leather sole still needs separate treatment to improve water resistance. Like all turnshoes, this model has been completely stitched inside out and then reversed, using no glue—a traditional method typical for historical footwear from this period.
