The mandilion was a type of cloak or loose outer garment worn from the late 16th century onwards, among others by soldiers. Mandilions came in various designs: some were sleeveless, while others had loose or hanging sleeves. Characteristic was the ability to wear the garment over one shoulder, which left the sword arm free. This wearing style even became a fashion trend at the end of the 16th century.
This cloak is based on 17th-century originals visible for example in paintings by Dutch and French masters. It is perfect for 17th-century re-enactment or LARP depicting a musketeer, nobleman, wealthy merchant, etc. from northwestern Europe. The fabric is approximately hip-length and the cloak can be fastened with long cords.
