Tips for Starting a Fire
Throughout history, there have been different methods for starting a fire. One method that was used in many different time periods was the use of flint and a fire striker.
What do you need?
-flint
-fire striker
-charcloth or waxed cloth
-jute rope
-kindling wood
How to start a fire with flint and a fire striker:
Step 1:
Jute rope is made from thinner strands twisted together. Pull these thinner strands apart and make a bird's nest from them. This will be your fine tinder.
Place your charcloth or waxed cloth on the flint. Make sure it sits exactly on the edge where you'll be striking with the fire striker. Strike the flint with the fire striker until a spark lands on the charcloth. When this happens, you'll see a small red spot on the charcloth. You can make this grow bigger by blowing on it gently.
Place the charcloth on the tinder you've made and fold it loosely around the cloth. The tinder should now start to burn. You can help this along by blowing gently on the starting flame once more.
Step 4:
Place the burning tinder in the object that needs to hold the fire, such as a brazier, fire plate, or a previously prepared fire pit. Add the kindling wood to the flame to make the fire grow.
Depending on how large a fire you need, you can feed it further with twigs and branches.
