Depending on the type of steel, a chainmail shirt needs more or less maintenance. Galvanized or stainless steel requires much less maintenance than plain steel, but plain steel is the most authentic material to use.
The first step in maintaining chainmail shirts is degreasing the mails. With a soft cloth you can wipe away a large part of the grease, but not all of it. To remove the remaining grease, you can use turpentine. Let the chainmail shirt dry thoroughly.
If you plan to wear it right away, you can leave the chainmail shirt as it is. If you want to store the chainmail shirt, you should oil it before putting it away. For this you can use mineral or vegetable oil or WD-40.
A regular steel chainmail shirt must be degreased before each use and oiled after each use to prevent rust.
