What is the best way to mount a helmet crest?
Some Roman helmets, worn by legion soldiers and centurions, were equipped with a crest mount, onto which a helmet crest could be placed. A helmet crest is a decoration on a helmet, usually made of horse hair or plumes.
Some sources suggest that the helmet crests of legion soldiers were mounted lengthwise, while centurions mounted theirs sideways.
The crest mount has the shape of a fork. A Roman helmet that is suitable for mounting a helmet crest, has a slot on top of the helmet. The bottom of the crest mount slides into this slot.
The helmet crest is then placed onto the crest mount, with the middle prong inserted into the helmet crest. At both ends of the helmet crest is a leather cord. The cords are tied to the small rings attached to the helmet for a secure fit.
