Viking helmet Erik, 2 mm (battle-ready)

A helmet is considered battle-ready with a steel thickness of at least 2 mm. The helmet is fastened under the chin with a strap equipped with a buckle. Sufficient padding must always be worn under the helmet, in the form of a quilted textile inlay or a arming cap. A leather 'parachute' inlay offers insufficient protection and is not considered suitable padding if no further padding is worn.

Add 3,5 cm to your head circumference if you wear an arming cap under your helmet. Do you wear a chainmail coif under your helmet? Add 2,5 cm to your head circumference. When you wear gambeson and chainmail coif under your helmet, you should add 6 cm to your head circumference.

Tip: how to adjust the finish of plate armor and weapons yourself

Luxury (polished) – polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even polish an item to a mirror finish with this. Test on a small area first!

Hand-made (matte) – place the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Regularly check the matte effect. Smooth the finish with black sandpaper.

Antique (patinated) – place the steel in a damp environment (preferably outside) and let it rust. Remove the red layer of rust, leaving the corroded surface layer.
