Bonnets like this were worn by ladies for centuries, from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. This cap suits medieval, Renaissance, Tudor, and early modern reenactment of the Golden Age and similar periods. Contrary to what most films show, ladies always wore headwear in public. Only unmarried girls and prostitutes went bareheaded. Women from the bourgeoisie and the working class wore caps especially often — peasant women, citizens, landladies, market vendors, and the like. Caps were practical too: the fabric kept hair clean during heavy, dirty work. Pleated caps are still part of traditional costumes across western and eastern Europe and the United States today.
