Glauberg in the German state of Hesse was the seat of a Celtic principality between the late Hallstatt and early La Tène periods. Excavations at Glauberg uncovered findings from a great oppidum — the Celtic form of urbanization — along with several tumuli. The remarkable riches buried alongside the people in those tumuli stand out as especially significant.
This statue once stood on one of the tumuli, believed to mark the burial of a Celtic prince or chief. Dating from the 5th century BC, it shows the figure wearing a helmet, carrying a round shield, and possibly wearing a chest cuirass.
Made from plaster alabaster and mounted on a marble pedestal, the bust measures 27 x 20 cm. These statues were presumably painted, just as Greek, Etruscan, and later Roman statues were.
