This bust is a replica of the statue of Emperor Trajanus. Craftsmen often painted these statues to make them look lifelike.
Trajanus (Latin: Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus Augustus; Itálica, September 18, 53 – Selinus, August 9, 117) was a Roman emperor from 98 to 117. Born into a non-Patrician family in the province of Hispania Baetica, Spain, he rose to fame during the reign of Emperor Domitianus. He served as a legatus legionis in Hispania Tarraconensis and in 89 supported the emperor against a rebellion at the Rhine led by Antonius Saturninus. In September 96, Domitianus was succeeded by Marcus Cocceius Nerva, an old and childless senator who was not particularly popular with the army. After a short and turbulent reign, members of the Praetorian Guard revolted and forced Nerva to adopt the more popular Trajanus as his heir and successor. Nerva died on January 17, 98, and his adopted son succeeded him without incident.
Made from alabaster entirely by hand, this bust stands 14 cm tall and comes with a black pedestal.
