This vexillum point is based on a Roman original from the 1st century AD and is now part of the collection of the Landesmuseum in Bonn. The vexillarii were the standard bearers of a military unit. This included not only the legion but also cavalry and auxiliary units. Just like the regimental flags of early modern Western armies, the vexillum was a valuable symbol of the unit it represented and was carefully defended in battle. Made from 9260 carbon steel.
The vexillum was the most important standard of certain types of units, especially the cavalry. Still, it ranked below the aquila (the eagle), which symbolized the entire legion. The vexillum may have represented a subdivision of a legion, but the exact meaning isn't entirely clear from the surviving sources.
