Product description

The Gladius is the weapon with which Roman legionaries conquered much of the world. They were in use from roughly the third century BCE to the third century CE. There are different types of gladii, which are named after their place of origin. This example is of the Pompeii type, a late development of the Gladius from roughly the middle of the first century and the successor to the Mainz type. The four best-known example of this type were found in Pompeii and date from roughly 79 CE, the year the Vesuvius erupted. The Pompeii type was probably the most popular type of Gladius. It is the shortest type and has a shorter point than the Mainz type. Over the years, the Pompeii type became progressively longer.

This luxury Gladius is an acquisition for collectors of classical weapons and for Roman re-enactors. It is based on an original from the first century CE. The brass fittings on the scabbard are based on originals in the Museum Valkhof in Nijmegen. This replica features a blade made of 9260 steel and a grip of wood with a screwed pommel.

The Gladius comes with a beautiful luxury brown leather scabbard that is decorated with brass fittings. The scabbard tip and the two square brass fittings at the top contain iconography that refers to warfare and victory. The underside of the scabbard has a palmet-shaped fitting as additional decoration. The scabbard has brass rings so you can hang it from your belt.
