Product description
The pugio was the secondary stabbing weapon of the Roman legionary, worn on the left side of the belt next to the sword (gladius). The weapon originated from Celtiberian designs during the Second Punic War and remained in use until the 3rd century as a symbol of the warrior class; it is also the weapon with which Julius Caesar was killed.
This version features a classic, broad blade with a central groove, manufactured from spring steel. The handle consists of multiple layers of wood and metal skillfully riveted together. The scabbard is made of brown leather with steel reinforcements and four carrying rings for attachment to the belt. The blade of this dagger is blunt ground with a rounded point.
Historically speaking, the pugio was a purely functional weapon: according to Roman writer Vegetius, a stab of only a few centimeters deep could be fatal, and the weapon proved its worth especially in close combat during ambushes and sieges. This blunt ground replica is suitable for show combat in re-enactment (Battle-ready) and is not intended for LARP.
