Celtic Horse Amulet Carpathians, bronze

Product description

This horse amulet with triskelion motif has a strong Scythian influence — not surprising, as the Celtic and Scythian areas bordered each other in the Carpathian region, and both cultures share Proto-Indo-European origins. The horse played a central role in both cultures and symbolized the fertility of land and people; the sun in the center of the ornament refers to the sun cult, while the luxurious horse bridle makes the animal a sign of aristocracy. The three horse heads depicted may refer to the sacred numbers three and nine from Proto-Indo-European paganism — a culture in which the well-known horse goddess Epona also has its origins.

Based on a treasure find from Craiova, Carpathians, 4th century BC. Performed in bronze, with dimensions of 3.4 x 3.9 cm.
