Product description
The Dipylon shield is a large, oval Greek body shield with the characteristic deep indentations on both sides. It was popular in the Geometric period (1000–800 BC) and takes its name from the Dipylon cemetery in Athens, where many vases and geometric artworks depicting this shield type were found.
The shape – oval with a pinched middle – is directly derived from the figure-of-eight shield of the Bronze age of the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures. Such shields offered the early Greek warrior almost complete body coverage.
The shield is constructed from wood, covered with leather and finished with brass – an imposing eye-catcher for re-enactment, living history, theatre and film and for collectors.
