This pendant in the shape of a crowned heart with the inscription 'Amours' on a banderole is modeled after a French sign from the period 1350-1424. The original is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes.

The inscription 'Amours' (love) is more common on medieval carrying and pilgrim signs and indicates use as a love gift between lovers. In medieval symbolism, the heart stood for goodness, love and life itself; the symbol developed from stylized fig and ivy leaves that appear as early as the third millennium BC, and appeared in courtly love literature in the 12th and 13th centuries, from where it spread throughout Europe as a love symbol.
