The spear with so-called "wings" or "perforated" spear head, which is often associated with the Normans, actually originates from the Frankish Carolingian period. The Vikings adopted this spear and continued to use it, both as a war spear and hunting spear, well into the high medieval period. On the battlefield, the prominent lugs on both sides of the spear head served to prevent the spear from penetrating too deeply during an attack (which would make it more difficult to pull the spear out) and to deflect enemy blows. When used during hunting (as a so-called "boar spear", specially designed for hunting wild boar and size game), these side wings not only provided protection against excessive penetration into the prey, but also gave the hunter extra control and protection against a wounded and agitated animal. This impressively size medieval spear head is made of hardened 9260 carbon steel. With a length of approximately 61 cm (24 in.) and edges of approximately 45.5 cm, the blad has a strong conical shape from a wide basic to a narrow point. This allows the carrier of the spear to inflict deep and wide stab wounds, as well as perform powerful hacking and cutting movements. With the help of two pre-drilled holes, the spear head can be firmly attached to the wood shaft of your choice to create your own winged spear or lance.
