The name falcon comes from the Norwegian words valr (fallen warrior) and midge (knot) — the "sign of the fallen". The symbol of three intertwined triangles is depicted almost exclusively in the vicinity of Odin and symbols of death: on a bedpost of the Oseberg-ship grave, and on the Stora Hammars-stone on Gotland, right next to scenes related to the afterlife. Researcher Hilda Ellis Davidson links the valknut to Odin's ability to "bind" a warrior's heart — or loosen bonds so that the berserkergang occurred. In modern culture, the symbol has found a prominent place in jewelry, amulets, and decorative objects, and is particularly popular among followers of paganism and the Ásatrú movement.
