The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, in short the Order of the Hospitallers, was an order that began in 1080 as a hospital in Jerusalem. Its original purpose was to provide aid to poor, sick or wounded pilgrims. After the Christians conquered Jerusalem in 1099, it became the first religious-military order, tasked with the defense and care of the Holy Land. After the Muslims recaptured it, the order successively took Rhodes and Malta as its headquarters.
Surcoats were often worn in the Holy Land, not only against the heat, but also as a means of recognition for fellow fighters.
This surcoat is made after historical examples of wool and lined with linen. It has a slit at the front and back, so that it is easy to wear while riding a horse.
The surcoat is 131 cm long. It is made for a chest circumference of 130 cm and a head of up to 68 cm.
