The heater shield, or kachel shield, developed around the end of the 12th century from the Norman kite shield. Heater shields owe their name to Victorian historians who associated the shape of this shield with a Victorian flat iron. These shields were considerably smaller than the earlier Norman kite shields; they offered less protection to the left leg, but were much more maneuverable on the other hand. In the early 13th century, heater shields were used in parallel with the large Norman kite shields. Later, only heater shields and bucklers were deployed. These shields were used on the battlefield until the 14th century and remained in use afterwards for tournament purposes.

This shield is fitted with steel in the shape of a cross for strength. It has a steel shield boss. On the back, it has a steel handle so you can hold it firmly. The shield is made of wood and is based on images in medieval manuscripts and on sculptures. Perfect for medieval re-enactors.
