This replica of a Roman oil lamp depicts a loving couple on a couch in relief — an image motif created in the 1st-2nd century AD. appeared throughout the Empire on so-called 'Bildlampen'. A similar piece has been published by the British Museum (inv. 1971,0426.3). Contrary to popular assumption, these types of motifs were not brothel-specific objects: they also occurred in ordinary houses and taverns, and as gift objects.
This lamp is intended solely as a display object for the display case or on the shelf - not for burning. Suitable as an art historical object for collectors.
