This Hallstatt horse amulet is based on an original from Mecklenburg, which is now in Harvard's Peabody Museum. The horse symbolized the fertility of land and people. The stylized axes hanging at the bottom of the piece of jewelry refer to a tradition dating back to the Copper Age, when Proto-Indo-European steppe herders began from 3,500 BC. used copper and later bronze axes as a symbol of aristocracy.
