This buckler is classified as a type IA according to Herbert Schmidt’s typology. It has a round shape with straight edges. The earliest depictions of this type of buckler appear in the early 14th-century Tower manuscript, though such weapons were likely already in use well into the 13th century. Bucklers like this one remained in use until the 16th century.
This buckler by Windlass Steelcrafts is perfect for Historical European Martial Arts and medieval reenactment. The buckler is a small shield used in sword-and-shield combinations during close combat in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It offered poor protection against arrows and projectiles but was excellent for restricting an opponent’s movements and deflecting attacks at close range.
This buckler features eight ribs reminiscent of sun rays. These ribs are ideal in close combat for blocking an opponent’s weapon. In the center is an integrated shield boss with a diameter of 12.7 cm, which can be used to strike or control the opponent. It has a unique hand-forged finish that gives it an antique appearance. The wooden grip ensures a firm hold during sword fighting. A great buckler for medieval sword fighting, reenactment, or as part of a medieval costume.
