Leg wrappings, also known as winingas or puttees, are part of classic Germanic and Viking dress. You wrap the long woollen bands around your lower leg, from the ankle to just below the knee. This keeps your trousers in place, protects your legs from cold and branches, and instantly gives your outfit a recognisable historical silhouette.
There is archaeological evidence for leg wrappings in Germanic regions from the second and third centuries AD. They were worn by the Romans at Hadrian's Wall, and later by Byzantines, Franks, Alemanni, Bavarians, Wends (Slavs), Norsemen, Vikings and many other peoples of Central and Northern Europe. The most commonly used materials were felt, wool, linen and leather.
These leg wrappings are made of wool and are therefore a versatile addition to an early medieval or Viking outfit. They are suitable for re-enactment, living history and LARP, and combine well with a tunic, trousers and matching fastenings.
