Product description
The justaucorps emerged in the second half of the 17th century and evolved from the casaque, a spacious traveling coat, into a more tightly cut jacket — hence the name, which means 'tight to the body'. Early models from around 1670–1700 reached approximately to the knee and featured a relatively straight cut, wide cuffs, and a long row of buttons from neck to hem. Beneath the justaucorps, men wore a shirt, long waistcoat, and knee breeches. During the 18th century, the justaucorps became a permanent fixture in the gentleman's wardrobe and the style continued to evolve. Ultimately, this jacket became an important predecessor of the frock coat and the modern three-piece suit.
This justaucorps is made of blue canvas cotton with a satin lining, and features a double row of buttons, a slightly flared cut, and wide cuffs.
